The first of several Smashburger franchises opened last week, and we went to check it out this past weekend. Dubbed as a ‘fast casual’ restaurant, the concept is somewhat in between an In N Out Burger and Burger Bar experience, although definitely more fast food than gourmet. Service is order at the counter, with your food brought to you. Burgers are $4.99 – $6.99, depending on whether you opt for 1/3 or 1/2 lbs. of the Angus beef, or a chicken burger.
Burgers are all cooked fresh from balls of meat that are smashed, grilled, then seasoned. There are 6 different burgers you can choose from; and of note is that I checked out the website, and each state has it’s own special type of burger. Here, we’ve got the Sin City Burger, which is topped with a fried egg, bacon, haystack onions, plus American cheese and a special sauce. I had a bite of this one and it was good… but had a bit too many toppings for me.
I ordered the 1/3 lb. Classic Smashburger, which came with lettuce, tomato, onions, American cheese, and ketchup on an egg bun. The burger was quite tasty, albeit a bit on the greasy side. The bun was nice and soft, and the toppings were all quite fresh. Everything was served to us hot.
We tried an order of the Smash fries, which are topped with olive oil and Rosemary, and are quite addicitive, as well as the fried pickles, which were also quite good!
What I like about Smashburger is that they offer interesting sides, and, of course, that everything is made fresh. It may be priced a bit higher than most fast food burgers, but I think people will be willing to pay a bit more for the quality and freshness.
