Mundo is a new Mexican restaurant located on the first floor of the World Market Center. Opened in January, they’ve already been generating quite a buzz; enough to make us drive out there for lunch to try them out.
I immediately loved the interior of the restaurant; modern and funky, yet classy and with a decidedly southwestern flavor to it. We were seated at one of the front tables in a nice, cushy sofa. The perfect way to enjoy a Saturday lunch. Seated in front of us was a little girl doing a book signing, and behind us was a suited contingency which George, the owner, later revealed to us was led by Minnesota Governor (and presidential hopeful) Tim Pawlenty. Interesting clientele!
As I was suffering from a bit of a headache, I skipped drinks and went with plain water. Adam started out with a delicious glass of red sangria, which I’m getting next time! We were given a nice hot plate of freshly made crispy tortilla chips, as well as three types of salsas. Our server explained that Chef Solano makes everything from scratch, including all of the salsas and the sangria.
After much deliberation, I decided to try the short rib tamale. This was an ‘open face’ tamale layered with a sweet corn masa, plenty of perfectly seasoned, tender short ribs, and topped with queso fresco and a mild pasilla chile sauce. Quite non traditional, this tamale had a fantastic blend of flavors going for it. The only thing that might have been missing was some type of texture contrast, beyond the few bits of corn kernels in the masa. Perhaps a bit of crisping to the shortribs in the end? Otherwise, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Adam went for one of his favorite Mexican dishes, carnitas. This dish contained a generous helping of slow cooked pork, and was accompanied with onions and cilantro, an extremely spicy habanero cucumber tomato salad, guacamole, and fresh flour tortillas. The carnitas were tender, with a wonderful blend of chile and nice sweetness. From the sound of it, I think that salad could have been just a tad less spicy.. Adam likes spicy food but was clearly suffering through small bitefuls of it.

We decided to share one of the sides, and the chile-lime corn sounded interesting. It was quite delicious, and had a unique and fantastic blend of flavors going on in it. The corn was sweet and crisp, there was just enough chile to season it well without making it overly spicy, enough lime to cut the sweetness, and one of my all time favorite cheeses, cotija in the mix. It was like an explosion of different flavors, and it all worked quite wonderfully.

All in all, quite a memorable meal. I’d definitely come back to try their dinner menu. My only concern for them is that they’re a bit out of the way. Had I not known they were there, I likely would’ve never seen the place. I think this is one of those restaurants that is going to do well, however, by generating a name for themselves through good word of mouth. So go try them!
