I’d seen HK Star on several prior visits to China Mama, and we finally got around to trying it for lunch one day. I love a place with good lunch specials, and was quite surprised to see what a huge lunch special menu they have. Specials are available every day (weekends included) from 11-4:30, and are separated into 3 price categories; $4.95, $5.95, and $6.95. All totaling, there are a whopping 97 lunch specials on the menu. I think that might well be a world record! Out of curiosity, I also counted the number of items on the regular menu which totaled to an astounding 338.. which of course doesn’t include the off-menu items that all Chinese restaurants have. Gordon Ramsay would probably be mortified at the lack of ‘keep it simple’ attitude here, but then again, Asian restaurants often have much larger menus than other regional cuisines.
Since this was our first visit here, we did decide to ‘keep it simple’. I went with one of my staples, braised tofu. Their rendition was quite good, with large, meaty cuts of tofu, and plenty of fresh veggies. I appreciated that the dish wasn’t overly greasy, as it can sometimes be, and the sauce was quite tasty without being overpoweringly salty. I felt the dish, along with some steamed rice, made for a perfect lunch portion.
Adam went with one of his staples, Mongolian beef. Their rendition was a bit spicier than some, and had plenty of beef, with green and white onions. The cuts of meat I had were of pretty good quality, but Adam said the last piece kind of ruined it by being a bit too sinewy.
The service was quite efficient, and remarkable speedy. The specialties here appear to be the fresh seafood items. The restaurant looks like a typical Chinese banquet place, with the requisite seafood tanks and bar. I plan to come back here for dinner the next time my family is in town, and try some of their seafood and other specialties. Definitely a good deal for lunch!
