I’d been meaning to try this place since it opened, and finally did… on the worst possible day, of course.
I was at the Cupcakery across the street, since it was their anniversary and they were giving away a free cupcake to each customer (yay!). I stopped at Create afterwards to pick up lunch. I could barely get in the door, it was so crowded! The line went all the way to the door and then curved from there! I thought to myself, ‘well, ordinarily I would come back some other time, since I AM on my lunchbreak, but this place must be damned good if it’s this crowded, so I’m staying!’. Big mistake. I waited in line for 20 minutes, then waited another 20 minutes for my order. And the worst part was, the food wasn’t really worth it. Yes, the burgers are good. They use certified Angus beef. They are environmentally friendly, using takeout products made of cornstarch. Great! I’m all for that! But like I said, the burgers are good, not GREAT. And if I’m going to wait 40 minutes for takeout, and pay $7.00 for the smallest burger and an order of fries, I expect it to be great.
When I got home, I saw a review of Create in that day’s Review Journal. Ugh! No wonder it was so crowded! I have the worst timing sometimes, I swear!
The thing Create does have going for them (along with being environmentally friendly) is the burger customization. There are 4 sizes, 3 types of buns, 26 toppings, 8 cheeses, and 27 sauces from which you can ‘create’ your own burger from. There are also 8 ‘pre designed’ burgers to choose from, for those who are lazy (like me!), as well as a veggie and turkey burger. I opted for the Modernist, which contains mushrooms, avocado, tomatoe, swiss cheese, and chipotle mayo. It was good, but a bit overcooked (I later found you can also tell them how you want your burger done, but you have to ask.)
I found the fries to be a bit mushy and greasy. I wonder if you can also ask for your fries well done?
Anyway, my consensus is this. If you are looking for a really good, ordinary burger, save your time and money and go to the In and Out across the street. Fantastic burgers for 1/2 the price! If you are looking for unique toppings and more of a ‘gourmet’ burger, then Create might be a good place for you. Just be sure to specify how you want your burger cooked, and don’t go the day after a major review!
